History of Waco Rotary

Founded on May 23, 1913, and chartered by Rotary International as the 74th Rotary Club in the world, the Rotary Club of Waco has long earned the respect and admiration of its community. From 11 charter members, the club has grown into one of the largest in Texas and among the largest worldwide.

Club members have played a vital role in Waco’s civic life, including serving as mayors, city managers, and leaders of the Chamber of Commerce. Many have also provided leadership for Rotary at the district level, with several District Governors and Assistant Governors among its ranks.

Youth service has been a defining focus since 1916, when the club helped establish the Waco Working Boys Club. Over the years, signature projects such as Challenge, a televised academic competition, Leadership in Free Enterprise (L.I.F.E.), and the Youth Citizenship Award have inspired and supported thousands of local students. The club has also funded scholarships, literacy programs, and international student opportunities, creating lasting impact in the lives of young people.

Globally, the Rotary Club of Waco has contributed generously to The Rotary Foundation, supported polio eradication, and sponsored students to study abroad as Rotary Scholars.

For more than a century, the Rotary Club of Waco has lived its motto of “Service Above Self,” strengthening the community and extending service around the world.
